Debate by Yourself!
Here we go!

A1: I agree. In most cases, high schoolers depend on their parents for their living
expenses. That means they don’t know the value of money. By working part-time,
they can realize how hard earning money is and how precious money itself is.
B1: I disagree. It is very important to let them know the value of money, of course,
but what do they need to do most as students? Their top priority should be studying
at school, needless to say. If they have a part-time job, it’ll cost them their time and
energy to concentrate on school work.
A2: I know what you mean, but do you suppose they can study only at school?
Working part-time enables them to study various things that their school can never
provide. Above all, such experience will directly lead to their future after high school.
B2: What can students study through their part-time jobs? Can you give me any examples?
A3: For instance, if they work for a convenience store or a restaurant, they can learn
basic social manners which they need to have in order to serve their customers. Wherever
they work, they must abide by the rules which their company or workplace has. They will
gradually enhance their sense of responsibility and punctuality.
B3: Students should learn those basic matters at school first. Even just finishing their
assignments can make them more responsible and they are also required to be punctual
when they go to school.
A4: There is something in what you say, but the biggest difference between attending school
and working part-time is whether it is mandatory or not. As everyone knows, attending
high school isn’t compulsory in Japan, but actually most students feel forced to do so because
their parents bear their school fees. I doubt that they can learn real responsibility under such
circumstances.
B4: There is no hurry to be mature since they are still young. Moreover, quite a few high schoolers
intend to enter university, so spending their time on a part-time job will ruin their future plans.
They shouldn’t, and their parents and teachers shouldn’t let them put the cart before the horse.
A5: I’d like you to look around you on the street, train and in any public places. There are a bit too many
childish adults who lack sense of responsibility and maturity. It’s a shame that educating those adults
takes plenty of time and the effort is usually fruitless. Younger is definitely better to learn what’s what.
B5: That is why we have school. We’d better make students focus on their school work and other
activities inside school. Putting them in the two worlds can exhaust them and they will leave things
half-hearted and unfinished.
So much for the debate.
